One for experienced surfers, the general area here is good for surfers and gets plenty of visitors from Auckland. It has a good atmosphere and generally feels very laid-back.
The beach is a long strip of clean sand to the right, while to the left it ends abruptly against the rocky point. There is plenty of room here as the beach is so long, even at weekends when the visitors come out from the city. Temperatures are fairly warm in summer, with the air reaching the mid 20s, and winters are fairly mild with lows around 15° C.
The waves here start building at less than 1 m and will reach about 3 m. Conditions are best when the wind is blowing from the west and the swell is coming from the south-east, east or north-east and the tide is rising and at either mid or high tide position. It is a beach break, both right and left, and the waves are hollow and fast and a lot of fun to ride. The wave length isn't the best around, as most days it will struggle to get more than about 50 m, but on a good day you might see it go over 100 m.
There are no facilities on the beach at all here but you can park within a couple of minutes walk of it, you just need to find a way through the trees. There are no towns or villages within walking distance either, so most people bring everything they need and make a day trip out of it.
There are no real dangers here, just try to keep your distance from the rocks and you'll be fine.
